Abstract
The invention comprises compounds stated to be active against pathogenic protozoa, of formulae <FORM:1022660/C2/1> wherein R1 and R11 are optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or heteroaromatic radicals and R111 and R1111 are H or halogen atoms or alkyl or alkoxy radicals; and the acid-addition salts thereof. The dihydrotetraazapyrenes are made by: (a) reacting a 1,4,5,8-tetraaminonaphthalene with at least two mols of a carboxylic acid or reactive derivative thereof, (b) reducing a 1,5-bis-(acylamino)- 4,8-dinitronaphthalene to the bis-(acylamino)-diaminonaphthalene which undergoes ring closure, (c) reducing the analogous tetraazapyrenes, or (d) adding to the tetraazapyrene, wherein R111 is absent, the compound HR111. The dihydro compounds may be oxidized to the tetraazapyrenes. Starting materials for method (b) are obtained by nitrating the corresponding 1,5-bis-(acylamino)-naphthalenes.
