Abstract

1,022,177. Photo-electric determination of light scattering. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. Nov. 6, 1963 [Dec. 7, 1962], No. 46384/62. Heading G1A. Apparatus for the photo-electric determination of light scattering comprises a liquid container, a light absorbing device within the container, means passing a beam of light into the container, a device within the container for sampling the intensity of light around a point in the incident beam and means for comparing the intensity of the sampled light with the intensity of the incident beam. Test liquid in a container 1 having black walls 2 angled to absorb stray light is illuminated through a window 3. Light scattered at a point 8 is reflected by a mirror 9 into a probe tube 6, so as to strike the surface of a lens 7 normally. The probe tube is rotatable about an axis 5. The scattered light is transmitted by a prism 10,or mirrors or fibre optics to a photo-multiplier on which it is incident alternately with reference light direct from the source of illumination. The A C. signal from the photo-multiplier drives an attenuator in the reference beam to balance the beams, the attenuator position being recorded against probe angle to give a polar plot of light scatter. In modifications, baffles may be provided for absorbing light, the incident light beam may be introduced by mirrors or fibre optics and the optical melt balance system may be replaced by a ratio recorder. The recorded variables can be transmitted to a computer on punched tape.
