Abstract
1,022,175. Strips of nails. SIGNODE CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1964 [Aug. 22, 1963], No. 33542/64. Heading B8C. [Also in Division F2] A method for producing a strip of nails stuck together comprises arranging the nails on a conveyer with their heads in overlapping relationship and the shanks of adjacent nails lying side by side, and conveying them to a station where adhesive is applied to bind the nails together. The nails 2 are formed with a part of their heads removed from along a chord that is a tangent to the nail's shank and are stored in a hopper 4 to be fed by a vibratory feeder (not shown) into a downwardly inclined track 8 where by means of a solenoid 14 and a vibrator 26 they are brought into single file with their heads in tiered overlapping relationship and their shanks parallel but slightly separated. The lower part of the track 8 leads them on to notched straps 60, 62 on the conveyer 28 where they are deposited with the aid of magnets and guide plates. The nested nails are moved to an adhesive station C where a saturated linear terephthalate copolyester adhesive is applied on the uppermost surfaces of the shanks from a slot in a block (not shown) with the aid of wiper pads, the block being held in engagement with the row of nails by means of a weight 156 and crank arm 158. The applied adhesive is given the desired flow characteristics by means of a hot air blower 172 so that it flows between the shanks and on to their lower surfaces. The shanks are brought closer together by moving the notched strap 62 towards the strap 60 at 144 and the adhesive is then cured under a heater 174. After conveyance to a taping station D polyester tapes are applied to the upper and lower surfaces of the strip of nails, the upper surface tape 175 being fed from a reel 176 via a roller 188 and supported by a resiliently biased bracket. The glued strip is passed under a cool air blower 210 to a knife assembly E where a knife is actuated to cut off equal lengths of the strip. The movement of the knife is regulated by a hydraulic cylinder 218 and a solenoid valve 266 controlled by a switch which is adjusted to respond to a predetermined amount of movement of the notched strip 62. The severed lengths 260 are removed from the conveyer by a separately driven belt 262.
