Abstract

Plasticized materials are degassed by a vacuum attachment 20 connected to an injection cylinder 1 just ahead of a decompression zone IV of the plasticizing screw 6, a back-flow stop 27 being provided near the discharge end of the screw. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the screw 6 is rotated by a motor 7 through gearing 8, 9 and reciprocated by a piston and cylinder 12, 13. The diameter of the core of the screw is varied to provide a feed zone I, compression zones II and VI, plasticizing zones III and VII, the decompression zone IV and vacuum zone V. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the pitch of the screw is varied, the screw core being of constant diameter.
