Abstract

1,021,822. Grinding. CHURCHILL MACHINE TOOL CO. Ltd. May 22, 1962 [June 5, 1961], No. 20140/61. Heading B3D. Control apparatus for a centreless grinding machine of the through feed type comprises timing means for initiating a truing cycle for the grinding wheel and suspending the grinding operation after a predetermined interval of grinding, means for recommencing the grinding operation after the truing cycle has been completed and means for providing a compensating feed to the grinding wheel and/or control wheel. The control wheel 3 and its drive are mounted on a slide movable, by a screw and nut mechanism, towards the grinding wheel 2. For fine feed the screw is rotated by an electric motor FCM and for coarse feed the nut is rotated by an electric motor CCM. A hand wheel 39 is provided for manual adjustment. A truing diamond 23 is traversable to and fro across the face of the grinding wheel 2 by an electric motor 22, downfeed of the diamond being effected by motor 24. Workpieces, e.g. needle rollers, are loaded into a rotary bowl feeder hopper 17, driven by motor 18, which discharges them along a work blade 20 between the grinding and control wheels 2, 3, the ground workpieces then passing through a pneumatic gauge head 21. If, due to wear of the grinding wheel, the gauged diameters are persistently oversize an automatic fine compensation feed is applied to the control wheel, this feed being repeated at timed intervals until the diameter is again brought into the permitted tolerance. If, for any unforeseen reason, the gauged diameters are persistently undersize the hopper motor 18 is stopped. At intervals determined by a timer the hopper feed is stopped and after a further short interval, sufficient to allow the workpieces that have already left the hopper to pass the grinding wheel, the truing cycle is initiated. While truing is in progress, coarse compensation is applied to the control wheel, the amount of compensation being set to advance the control wheel by an amount slightly less than the depth of cut of the truing diamond. Thus the first workpieces ground after truing are oversize. An electromagnetic device 25 is included in the shoot 26 through which ground workpieces pass so that the oversize workpieces are diverted automatically to a bin 27 from which they can be returned to the hopper 17 for regrinding. While the workpieces are leaving the grinding throat in an oversize condition the fine compensation feed operates at intervals until workpieces are brought within the permitted tolerance; the electromagnetic device 25 is released and workpieces then pass via shoot 26 into another bin.
