Abstract

1,021,305. Change-speed gear; friction clutches. T. E. C. HIRST. Jan. 11, 1965 [Jan. 21, 1964], No. 2583/64. Headings F2C and F2D. In a five-speed and reverse change-speed gear comprising gears 39, secured on an output shaft 40, meshing with pinions 10 secured through concentric hollow shafts to coned or flat friction clutch members 1B-1E, ratio selection is by selective engagement of the clutch members 1 with a common friction surface 16 of an input flywheel 2 by means of presser rings 11 engaged by lugs 12A of spring- loaded plungers 12 slidable in the flywheel 2 and operated by cam levers 15 and slides 20, 21 which rotate with the flywheel 2, the slides 21 engaging non-rotatable cam rings 22 longitudinally movable on a fixed cylindrical part 20A in the casing 6 by cams 23 on a cross-shaft 24 turned by a hand lever. The innermost shaft 5 also carries at one end a clutch member 1A and at the other end is splined a first ratio pinion slidable by a selector fork 28 on a selector rod 27 (Fig. 14, not shown) between a gear engaged position (Fig. 1) and a neutral and reverse position (Fig. 14). A lever 25 on a cross-shaft 37 is actuated by a cam on the cross-shaft 24 to move the selector rod 27. A reverse lever 31 (Fig. 15, not shown) on the shaft 37, moved by a respective cam on the cross-shaft 24, acts through a selector rod 33 and a fork 34 to move a reverse pinion 35 into mesh with the first gear pinion and with the first gear output gear 39. A pinion 43 on the cross-shaft 24 meshes an internal sector 44 on the hand lever, which may alternatively be actuated by hydraulic, pneumatic, or electrical means in response to input or output speed. Corresponding slides 20, 21 are connected together by mating end teeth (Figs. 4-13, not shown).
