Abstract

1,020,952. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. M. BAYLAC. Nov. 30, 1962 [Nov. 30, 1961; Feb. 28, 1962], No. 45348/62. Heading H2A. In a turbo-alternator in which the rotor is fluid-tightly separated by a surrounding insulating sleeve 12 from the stator, cooling liquid ducts in and/or round winding conductors in rotor slots communicate with two annular chambers 5, 6 at opposite axial ends of and axially aligned with the windings, the chambers furthermore being coaxial with and open towards the rotor axis and having different internal diameters so that in operation the differences between centrifugal forces acting on the liquid within them causes circulation of the liquid fed at low pressure into one chamber. The bores of annular partitions 2a, 3a fitted to collars 2, 3 determine the different chamber diameters, and the liquid, oil or water, is fed by a fixed injector 7, flows through the windings, spills over the partition 3a to encounter screens 28, 29 Fig. 11 (not shown), which absorbs its momentum and direct it through a discharge pipe 13 to a tank 30 from which it is recirculated via a pump 31, cooler 32, make-up inlet 33, filter 34, de-mineralizing and deionizing appliance 35, and a resistivity checking appliance 36. The ducts may be in the winding conductor slot portions, or in the slot portions and end windings, or in the slot walls laterally of solid conductors; they may also be in the slot wedges. In an embodiment of high-power, high-speed machines, the outlet partition 3a has a series of holes and ducts orientated in the opposite direction to that of the rotor rotation in order to reduce the liquid velocity and prevent it emulsifying. Elastic bellows 27 fix the sleeve 12 to stator frame checks 23 which carry rotor bearings 22 and fluid-tight packings 26.
