Abstract

Regulation of the feedwater flow to a steam or hot-water boiler is effected in the first place by a regulator disposed in the feed line and also in dependence upon the differential pressure across this regulator by sensing means which control the discharge from the feed pump. Steam boilers 16, 18 are fed with water through a common line 14 and respective branch lines 15, 17 from one of a pair of steam turbine driven pumps 10, 11 each of the branch lines containing a feedwater regulator 19 serving to regulate the flow of water to each boiler. Differential pressure flowmeters 21 are connected to the feed lines 15, 17 across the regulators 19 and are operatively connected to an electric selector relay 22 which controls a steam valve 25 thus regulating the speed of e.g. the turbine 12 driving the operating feed pump 10. Economical use of steam for driving the feed pumps can be achieved in this way. The feed pumps may form part of the installation described in Specification 942,618. In the event of failure of the pump 10 flowmeters 21 operate by means of relay 22 to open a valve 28 allowing air pressure to escape through vent line 27 from a capacity tank 26; this in turn causes an emergency steam valve 24 to open, bringing the standby pump 11 into operation.
