Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1020804/C2/1> wherein Z, R, R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or Z is a methyl group, R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or methyl groups and R2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkanoyl group of not more than 4 carbon atoms, and their preparation by (a) reaction of a compound of formula <FORM:1020804/C2/2> with hydrazine under basic conditions in a hydroxylic organic solvent; or (b) 17-acylation of compounds in which R2 = H to produce compounds in which R2 = alkanoyl. The compounds of the invention have analolin activity. 2 - Ethylidene - 17a - methyl - testosterone is prepared by reaction of 17a -methyl-testosterone with diethyl oxalate and sodium hydride to give 2 - ethyloxalyl - 17a - methyl - testosterone, and reacting this with acetaldehyde.
