1,020,636. Selective printing. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. March 22, 1963 [March 22, 1962], No. 11474/63. Heading B6F. Type-wheel actions; permutation and combination arrangements.-A printer in which type carriers are displaced into printing position in accordance with a digital code comprises a plurality of type wheels 2, arranged in pairs on a shaft 1, a support plate 13 associated with each pair of type wheels, a pair of permutation code selector element groups 12 with associated sets of electro magnets 17-1/I, 17-1/II . . . 17-8/I, 17-8/II, carried on said support plate and intercepting latches 10 on said type wheels co-operating with intercepting grooves established by the selector elements to arrest the type wheels at the selected printing positions. In operation the magnets 17 are energized, in accordance with the binary code representation of a character, whereupon levers 22 displace the selector elements 12, movable about pins 14 in the direction B, to the required positions in which a number of slots 16 are aligned to form a continuous groove. Immediately thereafter the type wheels 2 are released by a common control rod 5 rotating clockwise and pivot under influence of springs 4 connected to the type wheels by flexible bands 3 also in the clockwise direction until they become arrested by the intercepting latches 10, entering said continuous intercepting grooves to thereby position characters 7 of the printing position. To relieve the stress on the spring returned selector elements a cam 30 upon rotation of the rod 5 releases a roller 31 of lever 29, which is rotated counter-clockwise by a spring 32 so that a common guide bar 25 engages slots 26 or 27 in the selector elements. Alignment for impression.-Following positioning of the type wheels 2 at the printing position by the intercepting latches 10, the cam 30 rotating concomitantly with the rod 5 engages a roller 36 on a lever 37, to rotate said lever and engage a common guide bar 33 in notches 34 to secure and align all the type wheels. Index-setting arrangements.-In another embodiment (not shown) the sets of selector magnets may be replaced by angularly displaceable discs, such as telephone dials in accordance with depressed push buttons, which act to position the permutation code selecting elements.
