Abstract

A method of manufacturing electron tube sockets comprising a glass component moulded around current leads, of which at least some are bent and cranked on the side of the glass component facing the interior of the tube, adapted to be connected to corresponding electrode supports, is characterized in that the leads to be bent and cranked are bent and cranked beforehand, whereafter the glass component is <PICT:1020630/C1/1> moulded around the leads in a mould comprising a ring 10 of two semi-cylindrical elements, a cylindrical collar 11 surrounding the ring, a base member 8 supporting both the collar and the ring, a disc-shaped mould part 12 of pressed metal, of a diameter at the most equal to the inner diameter of the ring 10, supported in a fixed position inside the ring and adapted to receive the glass 23 to be moulded, the die metal being nickel to prevent adhesion to the glass and also being from 0.002 to 0.004 inch thick, a graphite punch 9 adapted to slide in the ring 10 above the mould 12, orifices 13 being formed in the mould 12 for the passage of the leads, vertical holes 21, 22 being formed in the punch 9 which register with the holes in the mould for receiving the rectilinear portions of said leads, and cavities having drilled extensions 14, 15 in the base member 8 for receiving holding and properly positioning the leads 16, 17 on the side where at least some of them are bent and cranked. Preferably the face of the mould part 12 which contacts the glass is coated with carbon black. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the current leads may have the electrode supports, carrying the electrodes proper, attached thereto, the electrodes being housed in the said cavities of the base member.
