Abstract

Compounds of formula <FORM:1020291/C3/1> where X is the residue of a thiocarboxylic acid (i.e. containing S in the carboxyl group) and Z is sulphur when Y is the residue of an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl mercaptan or a mercaptocarboxylic acid ester, and either sulphur or oxygen when Y is the residue of an alpha, beta or gamma mercaptocarboxylic acid or an ester thereof, are used as stabilizers in chlorine containing synthetic resin compositions, especially PVC or a PVC/polyvinyl acetate copolymer.ALSO:The invention comprises diorganotin compounds of formula <FORM:1020291/C2/1> where X is the residue of a thiocarboxylic acid as defined and Z is sulphur when Y is the residue of an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl mercaptan or a mercapto carboxylic acid ester and either sulphur or oxygen when Y is the residue of an alpha, beta or gamma mercapto carboxylic acid or an ester thereof. "Thiocarboxylic acid" is used to mean a carboxylic acid containing sulphur in the carboxylic group e.g. COSH: a "mercapto carboxylic acid" contains both -SH and -COOH groups in the molecule. Thiobenzoic acid is the preferred thiocarboxylic acid. The R groups may be alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl and may be the same or different. The compounds may be prepared from diorganotin halides or stannones by known methods. Compounds specified include dibutyl tin thiobenzoate/lauryl mercaptide, dibutyltin thiobenzoate/2 - ethyl hexyl mercaptoacetate and dibutyltin thiobenzoate/b - mercaptopropionate.
