Abstract

1,020,173. Overload slip couplings. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 6, 1964, No. 5167/64. Heading F2C. An overload slip clutch has means responsive to the torque transmitted providing a force in opposition to the engaging force to determine the maximum torque transmittable, the means being adjustable to vary the maximum permissible torque. A driving, or driven, plate 20 is clamped between driven, or driving, plates 26, 28 by springs 34, the plate 28 having threearmed levers 44 pivotally mounted thereon at 46, each lever having arms 48, 50 engageable with the ends of bolts 38 which are adjustably fixed in the plate 26 and pass through clearance holes in the plate 28, each lever 44 having a third arm 52 passing through an aperture in a flange 58 of a sleeve 56 which carries fittings 64 by which the sleeve is connected to a driven, or driving, shaft. The sleeve 56 can be adjusted axially of a driving, or driven, shaft 10 by changing the size of a spacer 62 between which and a collar 60 and lock nut 63 the sleeve is fixed axially to the shaft. Axial adjustment of the sleeve 56 varies the effective length of the arm 52 to vary the maximum torque transmittable by the clutch. In operation, assuming shaft 10 to be the input shaft, rotation of the driven plates 26, 28 rotates the levers 44 the arms 52 of which rotate the output sleeve 56, and the transmitted torque causes the levers 44 to pivot so that the arms 48 or 50 engage the corresponding bolts 38 to produce a bias in opposition to the engaging springs 34. Upon, overload the bolts 38 are shifted axially to disengage the clutch. If the clutch is to transmit different torques for different directions of rotation the arms 48, 50 are of different lengths. The bolts 38 may be adjusted in the plate 26 to minimise backlash and compensate for wear.
