Abstract
A cooling tower has a plurality of plates, slotted so that the slots form series in horizontal planes, the plates being so arranged that liquid can flow down their surfaces and air can flow up the channels between plates, and each series of slots in a horizontal plane is interrupted at intervals by non-slotted parts of plates. The plates can be of asbestos or synthetic plastics. In Fig. 9 (not shown), water to be cooled passes from a channel 1 by way of channels 2 to spray plates 3 and on to baffle plates 14 on which it flows downwards to be received in a cup at the bottom of the cooler. Air passes counter-current to the water trickling down. Plates 14 rest on girders 6 by their projections 5. The cooler is divided into zones G, and each contains a series of baffle plates inserted separately or as a box unit. Various arrangements of slots on the plates are described.
