In a device for attaching to a jacked up vehicle wheel which is then rotated, and unbalance is corrected by moving a counterweight radially and polarly with respect to the wheel so as to indicate the amount and position of weights to be added to the vehicle wheel to achieve balance, the counterweight is in the form of two eccentric discs 209, 221, Fig. 11 of equal weight rotatably mounted on a central hub. The base plate 26, Fig. 3, is connected by bolts 24 to an adaptor of suitable shape for securing to the particular wheel 6 to be balanced and is centred by four spring pressed lugs 54. A central hub 71 normally rotates with the base plate 26 and wheel 6 but on pulling or pushing a knob 106 a clutch engages either a forward or reverse gear to cause hub 71 to rotate in one direction or the other relative to plate 26 so that the vibration of the wheel is minimized. Thus since discs 209, 221 are carried by hub 71, the position of an arrow frame covering a window 117 in a shield plate 97 indicates the polar position of balance weights to be placed on wheel 6. On pulling or pushing a knob 151, a clutch engages either a forward or reverse gear to cause discs 209, 221 to rotate equal amounts in opposite directions relative to hub 71 and when vibration of the wheel has been eliminated, the position of an upstanding rim of disc 209 in calibrated window 117 indicates the magnitude of the balance weight to be added to wheel 6. The discs 209, 221 are as shown, circular but could have a logarithmic contour in order to make the scale, in window 117, linear. An approximate relative location of the discs 209, 221, may be seen by coloured raised portions 237 through openings 236 in shield plate 97.
