Abstract
1,019,068. Crimping and texturing yarn. MONSANTO CO. Oct. 16,1964 [Oct. 28,1963; Oct. 31,1963], No. 42401/64. Heading D1F. A heated and stretched, nylon, multifilament yarn is (a) continuously deformed into a corrugated shape simultaneously with cooling thereof, in order to impart a potential crimp which is intended to be developed at a later stage e.g. in a tufted fabric, and (b) permanently cold crimped e.g. in a stufferbox, in order to improve the interfilament cohesion and reduce slippage during manufacture of the yarn into fabrics and articles. As shown, unoriented or partially oriented yarn 10 supplied from a bobbin 12 passes around a snubbing bar 13 serving as a tensioner, through feed rolls 15, several turns around a heated stretch pin 16 whereat the attenuation is concentrated, between synchronously driven, axially parallel, crimping gears 17,18, and around an idle spacer roll 25. A nozzle 34 directs cooling air on to the gear 17, but not directly on to the moving yarn. The yarn is withdrawn from the gear crimper and forced into a stuffer-box by feed rolls 35, 36. Crimped yarn emerging against the pressure exerted by a loaded clapper bar, Fig. 2 (not shown) is taken up as a package 49 by a ring twister.
