Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1018992/C2/1> and the corresponding D 16-derivatives, wherein R is hydrogen or an alkanoyl group having not more than 8 carbon atoms, and the preparation thereof by treating a compound of the formula <FORM:1018992/C2/2> wherein R is as defined above, with an acidic substance, e.g. H2SO4, HCl or CH3COOH, in a water miscible organic solvent medium to obtain the D 16-compound and, if desired, reducing the D 16-compound to obtain the corresponding saturated pregnane. A 3BETA - alkanoylaxy - 16 - methyl - 16,20 - dioxo - 16,17 - seco - 5a - pregnane may be obtained as a by-product in the first step.ALSO:Urea and thiourea derivatives of the general formula <FORM:1018992/C2/1> wherein R1 and R2 may be the same or different and represent alkyl radicals; R3 represents an alkyl, haloalkyl, aryl, haloaryl, alkaryl, nitroaryl, alkoxyaryl or alkylmercaptoaryl radical or the residue obtained by the removal of a hydroxyl group from a carboxylic acid, a sulphonic acid, a phosphoric acid dialkyl ester or a thiophosphoric acid dialkyl ester; R4 and R5 may be the same or different and represent alkyl, aryl or alkaryl radicals attached directly or via an oxygen or nitrogen atom to X, or one or both of R4 and R5 represents another grouping <FORM:1018992/C2/2> X represents a phosphorus or arsenic atom; Y represents a sulphur or oxygen atom; and Z represents an electron pair or a sulphur atom, with the proviso that when X is arsenic, Z is an electron pair and R4 and R5 are the grouping <FORM:1018992/C2/3> are stated to be new compounds having herbicidal and insecticidal activity. They may be prepared by reacting organic compounds of the general formula <FORM:1018992/C2/4> wherein R1, R2, R4, R5 and X are as defined above, with an isocyanate or isothiocyanate of the general formula R3.NCY, wherein R3 and Y are as defined above, and, in the case of a product containing trivalent phosphorus, reacting said product, if desired, with sulphur or a sulphur-yielding agent in order to convert the phosphorus into the pentavalent state. The reaction may be effected in the presence or absence of diluents and with or without the use of elevated temperature and pressure.
