Abstract

A process for making a linear high molecular weight polycarbonamide comprises: (a) providing essentially solvent-free polymer forming reactants in liquid state; (b) mixing said solvent free reactants in substantially equal volumetric proportions under conditions of high pressure and high rheological turbulence to provide an homogeneous mixture thereof; (c) raising the temperature of the reactants to polycarbonamide forming temperature while at said high pressure and turbulence; (d) reducing the pressure of the mixture and separating liquid components thereof from vapour components; and (d) completing the polymerization of said liquid components. An apparatus suitable for effecting the process is described and claimed (see Division B1). The Specification exemplifies the preparation of polyhexamethylene adipamide.
