Abstract

[Also in Division H4] A plate 13, Fig. 1 (not shown), is maintained spaced from a plate 12, by causing the plate 12 to emit sonic or ultra-sonic waves in the medium e.g. air occupying the space between the plates, the wavelength being greater than the spacing between the plates whereby a sufficient radiation pressure is produced in the medium to maintain the plates in spaced relationship. The plate 12 is fixed to a transducer 11 having excitation windings connected to an alternating current generator. The transducer 11 is of the magnetostriction or piezo-electric type in which the alternating current causes ultrasonic vibrations of the plate 12. Complementary spherical or frusto-conical surfaces 14, 15 on the plates ensure that the plates remain in lateral alignment. In a modification fixed magnet inserts provided in the plates ensure the lateral alignment. In Fig. 4b (not shown) the transducer is in the form of a ring which emits radial ultrasonic waves to maintain a shaft spaced therefrom. The transducer may be disposed in a shaft which is to be maintained spaced from a surrounding solid cylinder (Fig. 4c, not shown).
