Abstract
Polyesters having a molecular weight above 20,000 are made by polymerizing a lactone having three or at least five carbon atoms in the ring in the presence of a catalyst, the lactone having been previously purified by distillation over an organic isocyanate. Catalysts for the polymerization are alkali metals, aluminium alkyls, aluminium dialkyl chlorides, aluminium alcoholates, sodium naphthalene, triethylamine, sulphuric acid, boron trifluoride, aluminium trichloride, stannic chloride, titanium tetrachloride, trifluoroacetic acid or anhydride, acetyl perchlorate or a mixture of trifluoroacetic anhydride and aluminium trichloride. Polymerization is effected with the exclusion of water and preferably also of oxygen in the presence or absence of an inert organic liquid. The polymers are soluble in benzene toluene, chloroform, dioxane and tetrahydrofurane. Examples describe the polymerization of beta-propiolactone, delta-valerolactone and epsilon-cuprolactone. Uses.-Fibres, films, lacquers.ALSO:Lactones having three or at least five carbon atoms in the ring are purified by distilling them over an organic isocyanate (e.g. phenyl isocyanate or toluene diisocyanate). The purified lactones may then be rendered substantially completely anhydrous by further distilling them with the addition of calcium hydride or polyphosphoric acid. Examples describe the purification of beta-propiolactone, delta-valerolactone and epsilon-cuprolactone.
