Abstract

A copolymer of an alpha-olefine having at least three carbon atoms in the molecule with a comonomer of the formula X-CH2-CH = CH2 where X represents a halogen-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon radical is made by contacting a mixture of the monomers with a catalyst consisting of a transition metal compound and an organometallic compound. The alpha-olefine may be propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1, heptene-1, octene-1, nonene-1, decene - 1, 3 - methyl - butene - 1,3 - methylpentene - 1, 4 - methyl - pentene - 1, 4 - methylhexene - 1, 4,4 - dimethyl - pentene - 1, or 3,5,5 - trimethyl - hexene - 1. Specified halogen comonomers are 4-chlorobutene-1, 5-bromopentene - 1, 6,6 - dichlorohexene - 1, 8-bromooctene - 1, and 11 - chloroundecene - 1. The copolymers may be recovered by known techniques. Exemplified catalyst is TiCl3, prepared by reducing TiCl4 with aluminium sesquichloride, and aluminium diethyl chloride. The copolymer may be fractionated by solvent extraction.
