Abstract
An insulating glass or vitreous enamel comprises in per cent by weight SiO2, 20-34; Bi2O3, 5-13; PbO, 31-58; it contains no B2O3, lead compounds initially present may be e.g. PbO, Pb3O4, white lead, or lead mono-, di-, or tri-silicate. Also present may be 0-14% in total of one or more of BaO, CaO, MgO, ZnO, and SrO; 0-9% in total of one or more of ClO2, ZrO2, TiO2, and MoO3; and 0-10% in total of Al2O3 and/or La2O3, the balance, if any, consisting of other compatible constituents. The mixture may be smelted at 1150 DEG C. in an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. provided by use of Pb3O4 in the starting material; the smelt is then quenched in water, and wetground, e.g. to pass 400-mesh (American Standard); the material may be used as a slip for spraying e.g. on to stainless steel. Alternatively, the ground material may be dried, sintered, and pressed, e.g. into beads suitable for a hermetic seal, e.g. a compression seal or feed-through bead. The composition may be yellow and may also be opaque. The material has low thermoneutron capture and consequently does not deteriorate excessively in a nuclear reactor.
