Abstract

1,017,849. Semi-melt spinning synthetic polymers. SOC. RHODIACETA. May 7, 1964 [May 22, 1963], No. 19098/64. Heading B5B. Synthetic high polymers are semi-melt spun by extruding downwards a heated mixture of the polymer and a solvent therefor into a heated vertical spinning cell through a spinneret to form a bundle of filaments which is coaxial with the spinning cell and which is drawn downwards through the cell and out of the open bottom of the cell, the bundle of filaments being cooled during its passage through the cell solely by the entry of air or other gas into the open bottom of the cell and its flow up through the cell, said flow being a natural draught due to the air or other gas entering the cell becoming heated in the upper part of the cell and escaping through one or more apertures in the top of the cell which communicate with the outer atmosphere, the upward flow of air or other gas through the cell being so directed as to be uniformly distributed in relation to the bundle of filaments and the rate of flow being regulated at a level at least as high as the face of the spinneret. The material which is semi-melt spun may comprise a mixture of polyvinyl alcohol and water. The apparatus used may comprise a vertical spinning cell open at its lower end and having in its upper end a coaxial spinning jet, means for heating the cell and an obturator disposed at a level at least as high as the jet, the obturator having, as the only communication of the top of the cell with the external atmosphere, one or more apertures positioned symmetrically in relation to the vertical axis of the jet. The obturator may be provided with a single annular aperture, the centre of which is situated on the axis of the jet, or with a number of apertures disposed in one or more concentric circular rows whose common centre is situated on the axis of the jet. The obturator may comprise at least two contacting annular flat discs or plates adapted to pivot relatively to one another about their common axis, the apertures of each annular disc being adapted to be registered at least partially with those of the other.
