Abstract

Coloured shaped materials of acrylonitrile polymers are made by dissolving in a solution of such a polymer a dispersion of a pigment in a homo- or co-polymer of vinyl acetate, and then shaping the solution and removing the solvent therefrom. The examples describe the addition to dimethyl formamide solutions of polyacrylonitrile of dispersions of: (1) a red azo dyestuff in polyvinyl acetate, (2) copper phthalocyanine in polyvinyl acetate, (3) chlorinated copper phthalocyanine in polyvinyl acetate, (4) oil soot in polyvinyl acetate, and (5) indanthrone in a copolymer of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid. The resulting compositions are formed into films or fibres. The pigment dispersions of Examples (1-4) are made by working polyvinyl acetate and pigment in the presence of a non-solvent, e.g. water or diacetone alcohol, and the pigment dispersion of Example (5) is made by adding an aqueous dispersion of pigment to an ammoniacal aqueous methanolic solution of the vinyl acetate-crotonic acid copolymer, and then acidifying the mixture to coprecipitate the copolymer and pigment.
