6-Demethylchlortetracycline is produced by growing a chlortetracycline-producing microorganism, such as S. viridifaciens ATCC 11989, NRRL 2964 or NRRL 2966, in an aqueous medium containing assimilable sources of chlorine, carbon and nitrogen and a methionine antagonist such as ethionine, methionine sulphoxide or a -methylmethionine.
