Abstract
1,017,518. Welding by fusion; making valves. BAILEY METER CO. June 25, 1963 [June 26, 1962], No. 25145/63. Headings B3A and B3R. A valve body 18 (Fig. 4, not shown), of one metallic composition has inlet and outlet ends 20, 22 provided with integral end portions formed by weld deposits 24<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>1</SP> to facilitate automatic welding into a piping system. A cast valve body 18 of a ferritic steel, e.g. a low alloy chrome-molybdenum steel, is machined with bevelled ends and preheated to 450‹ F. The deposits 24<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>1</SP> are formed in a number of passes by rotating the body 18 and welding with a carbon steel rod using an inert gas shielded metal are. The deposits 24<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>1</SP> are machined and the valve body is stress-relieved by heating to 1350‹ F. for half an hour and cooling slowly. Subsequently the inlet and outlet ends are welded to carbon steel pipes by automatic submerged arc welding.
