Abstract

1,017,493. Wheel set lathes. B. SCHONDORFF. Oct. 15, 1962 [Oct. 14, 1961], No. 39003/62. Headings B3B and B3T. A lathe for machining railway wheel sets at track level comprises two tool rests 1 and 2 mounted for transverse and longitudinal movement on a bridge support 7 (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown). The support 7 spans the through-rail track 8 and is carried on the machine foundations by supports 10, 11 which are connected together below the track 8 by tie-rods 20, the space between the bridge 7 and supports 10, 11 forming a roll-through opening 9. The supports 10, 11 carry adjustable headstocks 12 including face-plates 14 driven via gears 15 by motors 16. The wheel set 17 is lifted by appliance 18 to the lathe centre level and is clamped to the faceplates 14 by jaws 19. Cuttings or chips from the machining operation are received into a chip car 23 in a pit 22 below the rail level. Control of the machine is effected by a centrally positioned control panel 21.
