Abstract
A process for the manufacture of polyamide suitable for hardening of polyepoxides comprises reacting polyalkylene polyamines with unsaturated carboxylic acids (or their amide-forming derivatives) obtained by the cationic addition of 0.5 to 20 molar quantities of indene and/or coumarone to conjugated unsaturated fatty acids having 12 to 22 carbon atoms. The fatty acids may be used in the form of their mixed esters and the indene and/or coumarone may be used in the form of coal tar oils. Specified polyamines are diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylenepentamine and hexamethylene diamine. Examples of the preparation of polyamides are given. Example 7 describes the use of these polyamides for curing (a) an epoxy resin derived from bis-phenol-A and epichlorohydrin and (b) a mixture of (a) with butyl glycidyl ether.
