Abstract
Polymeric compositions containing titanium dioxide pigment particles the surface of which carries trimethylol propane, and polystyrene or a polyolefine for example polyethylene or polypropylene are prepared by either milling the liquid monomer and the trimethylolpropane-treated pigments in the presence of a surfactant, then polymerizing the monomer round the pigment particles; by milling or tumbling the finely-divided polymer with the treated pigments and subsequently extruding or injection moulding the pigmented polymer; or by incorporating the treated pigment into a plasticizer and then incorporating the resulting mixture into a polymer.ALSO:Titanium dioxide pigment is treated with trimethylolpropane The pigment may be anatase or rutile, coated or uncoated. The trimethylolpropane may be milled with dry pigment or dissolved in a solvent and the pigment slurried in the solution; if the pigment is produced by a vapour-phase method the trimethylolpropane may be added to the prestream containing the pigment. Normally enough additive is used to ensure the retention of 0.02% to 5% by weight of final pigment, but the amount of trimethylolpropane may be up to 50% by weight of final pigment.
