Abstract
1,017,237. Fuelling reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 7, 1962 [Nov. 7, 1961], No. 39830/61. Heading G6C. An arrangement for loading a string of fuel elements into a vertical fuel channel of a reactor wherein two or more support wires are secured to the string so as to hold the elements together in a vertical position. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, a string 10 of fuel elements comprises an upper spacer 11, seven fuel elements 12 and a wiresecuring mechanism 13. The string is supported in the channel by a member 20 whereby each element 12 rests on the element beneath it, each element having a thermocouple (not shown) from which an electric lead 15 extends to a socket 16 secured to the spacer 11. As described, the member 20 is a plain independent fuel element. The string 10 is lowered into the channel by four support wires 17 having an outer cover 18 and connected at their upper ends to an adaptor 19 having a head 19a for engagement by a grab. The mechanism 13 includes a housing 24 screwed into the lowermost element 12 and having four seatings 27 for engagement by balls 22 attached to the lower ends of wires 17. A plunger 28 having a stop flange 29a is biased by a spring 30 so as to hold the balls 22 in the seatings 27. When the plunger nose 28a engages the member 20 at the end of the lowering operation the plunger moves upwards relatively to the housing 24 so as to release the balls and the adaptor 19 and wires 17 may be withdrawn from the channel. In a modification, Fig. 4, the upper ends of the four support wires 45 are anchored to a block 47 to which thermocouple leads 50 are also fixed. The block 47 is supported by a chain 48 whereby the fuel element string may be lowered into the channel.
