Abstract

1,017,056. Making cartons. MOTIVATIONAL PACKAGING Ltd., and P. H. P. HEAD. Dec. 3, 1963 [Sept. 3, 1962], No. 8310/62. Heading B5D. A carton blank is removed from a magazine 10 by a former 1 and retained thereon by suction means during subsequent erection of the carton about the former. In one embodiment a carton with gussets D folded against side walls B is formed initially and walls C are folded by a pair of spaced fingers 15 and are held down by cheeks 16 whilst a spring-loaded pivoted roller 17 first breaks the crease of the front side wall B and then of the rear side wall B. The side walls are pressed on to the former 1 by rollers 21, 22 resiliently mounted on arms 23, 24 rotating at four times the speed of the turret 2 about axes 25, 26, since there are four formers on the turret. The carton is finally " flicked " off the former 1 and dropped on to a conveyer 32. To produce a carton with gussets D folded against end walls C, the fingers 15 and cheeks 16 are removed to permit the sides B to be folded first; cheeks or fingers 29, 30 then hold the gussets along the ends of the former and the end walls are folded down between cheeks 31 before finally " flicking " the carton on to the conveyer 32. Instead of fingers 29, 30 rollers 21, 22 may have a thick surface layer of soft rubber which bulges around the edge of the former 1 when pressed thereagainst and thus folds the end walls C. For cartons with gussets formed on the outside, fingers 15 are retained but cheeks 16 are deleted and rollers 21, 22 are fitted with cheeks or fingers 29, 30. If heat-sensitive adhesive is used dielectric heating means are incorporated in the cheeks 31, the former being turned through 90 degrees if the gussets D lie against the side walls B. The turret 2 may be rotated about a horizontal axis (as shown) or a vertical axis. The former 1 is carried on an arm 3 with cam followers 6, 7 and a telescopic rod 8. On movement of follower 6 up cam face 11 the former extends radially into the magazine 10 to pick up a blank and then returns to rotate with the turret 2. At the end of the cycle movement of follower 7 along cam face 27 causes the former to " flick" outwards to eject the erected carton.
