A knotter for a baling press has cord endholding means comprising a pair of spaced-apart discs mounted for rotation about a common axis, each disc having two pairs of peripheral notches and the notches being arranged in two diameticallyopposite sets, the notches of one set being shallower than those of the other set, a fist cordclamping member disposed between the discs and having an outer surface concentric with said axis at substantially the base of the shallower notches, and a second pivoted cord-clamping member having an inner surface complementary with and desiliently biased against said inner surface. The cord-holding means comprises a pair of discs 8, 9 which are fixed to a rotary shaft 11 and are spaced apart at their peripheries, the latter being formed with deep and narrow diametrically. opposite slots 12,14 which lead in the direction of rotation P, and with broad and shallow diametrically opposite trailing notches 13,15. A fixed member 16, projecting between the discs, has a clamping arm 19 the outer surface of which is concentric with shaft 11 and extends to the base of the notches 13,15. A clamping arm 21, pivoted on a fixed pin 20, has an inner surface complementary to the outer surface of arm 19 and biased thereagainst by a spring 22. In the initial position, the free end 5 of a cord 4 encircling a bale 3 passes through the notches 12 and the notch 15 in the rear plate 8, and is held between plate 8 and the enlarged end 23 of arm 21. The other and continuous end 6 of cord 4 passes through the notches 13. The knotter is then operated, the ends 5, 6 being tied by a rotary bill 2 while shaft 11 rotates through 180 degrees. During this rotation the ends 5 and 6 pass between and are clamped by, the arms 19, 21, the cord ends then being severed by a knife 7, when the original end 6 is held between plate 8 and end portion 23 to constitute the new free end 5.
