July 27, 1962 [Aug. 4, 1961], No. 28996/62. Headings G4A. G4D and G4H. In a measuring apparatus, e.g. a fluid dispenser, a mechanically-driven pulse generator is used to drive counters which indicate the quantity measured and a proportional quantity, e.g. the total cost of the fluid dispensed. The pulse generator comprises a drum 6 (shown developed) having rows of holes 19 which co-operate with lamps and photo-cells to give thirteen pulse trains on lines 12. The drum is driven by way of a flow-meter 1 and rotates once for each 10 centi-litres dispensed. On line 12v there appears a pulse for each centilitre flow, there being 10 holes in row 19v. The pulses are counted on decade counters 13-17, and the count, indicating the total volume dispensed, is shown at 36. For each revolution of the drum 6 there appear on lines 12 1 to 12 9 one to nine pulses. The price of the fluid per 10 centi-litres is set on switches 20-23, this pre-setting selecting certain of lines 12 1 to 12 9 for feeding pulses to decade counters 28-32. In the present example, for each 10 centilitres counter 31 receives seven pulses, counter 30 receives three, counter 29 four, and counter 28 nine. The total cost of the fluid dispensed is shown at 38. Since one counter may receive a pulse while the counter of the lower decade is changing from nine to zero and thereby emitting a carry pulse, units 33-35 are provided. When set by a carry pulse a subsequent pulse on lines 12k-12m causes the corresponding counter 31-29 to be advanced by one. The cost is correct after each revolution of the drum. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), 5 centilitres is the minimum volume that can be priced correctly. In this instance an arrangement of switches halves the price set at 37 so that the cost shown at 38 is correct for each 5 centi-litres dispensed.
