Abstract

A method of restoring defective timber or plaster in an established building comprises forming, in situ, within a cavity in a deficient timber or plaster member of the building or between such a member and another structural member a rigid expanded polyurethane or extended poly-epoxide resin, permanently adherent to the member or members and filling the cavity, optionally encased with resin-bonded glass fibre reinforcement. As specific applications the following are given: (A) An internally rotted timber is hollowed out, lined with resin/glass and filled with foamed resin. (B) Resin/glass members are substituted for destroyed timbers, joined by lay-ups to retained timbers, the edges are sealed and the cavity is filled with foam. (C) Collapsible or complete resin/glass structures are preformed to repeat the section of timbers the ends or external surfaces of which are rotted. They are fixed to the stumps of the original timbers and filled with resin; (D) A new end is prepared for a timber member by holding new and old timbers one inch apart, filling the gap with resin, laying up with resin glass bandages around the whole joint. In another embodiment plaster work, particularly ceilings which have become weakened by fungal or insect attack are strengthened by applying foaming material to the back surface, a restraining material such as woven fibre glass being used to hold the foam until it cures. The bulk element used for filling the cavities may be (a) a rigid polyurethane foam produced by reacting a polyester or polyether with an isocyanate and water or (b) a polyurethane or polyepoxide with added hardeners, extenders such as tar oil, mineral fillers to improve the workability and impart self-extinguishing properties, lightweight mineral or vegetable aggregates to form a resin in which voids are filled with aggregate particles, and fibrous material.
