Abstract

<PICT:1016554/C6-C7/1> Shoe upper material, e.g. leather, is rendered capable of stretching by virtue of the provision therein of finely distributed cuts 7 right through the material, the cuts being so disposed in rows or series, with the cuts in alternate rows or series staggered with respect to the cuts in intervening rows, that there are no continuous straight lines of uncut material in any direction in which stretch is required to take place. The cuts may take the form of straight, semicircular or V-shaped slits, slots or square-shaped apertures, and may be cut with press knives. In order to assist the upper material to return to its unstretched state after stretching the material may be backed with a sheet 6 of elasticized textile fabric attached to the upper material by stitching or adhesive. The material may be used for any part of a shoe upper but is particularly useful as an elastic gore.
