Heading D1A [Also in Division F4G] A washing machine with an outer drum 4 mounted upon springs 3 and a rotatable inner drum 5 has a boiling action by a heater 10 with means for continuously extracting steam from the drum and condensing it. The steam is extracted from the drum from an overflow opening 12 by suction achieved by a water injector 18. The injector is supplied from the water input pipe 20 and the jet is directed along the outlet pipe 13 to a pump 15 and drain 17. Steam which is sucked out of the drum is condensed by the cold water in the injector or it may be condensed in a separate condenser 25 (Fig. 2; not shown) and sucked from the drum by a fan 23. Fresh water is supplied to the drum from a line 6 through an electromagnetically operated valve 7 under control of water level diaphragm operated switches 9, 9a. A separate pump (not shown) is provided for emptying the drum when required. The operation of the machine may be controlled by a programme controller 8. A check valve 21 in the injector line 20 may be controlled by the controller 8 and/or by a thermostat 8<SP>1</SP>. In a control circuit, Fig. 7 (not shown), press-buttons 147-150 are operated to set the machine for different types of wash and the rhythm of rotation of the inner drum can be changed as described in Specification 970,516. The machine can be adapted as heat-drier by providing a fan 117 Fig. 4 (not shown) and a heater 120 in flexible lines 125,119 leading from the top of the outer drum 104 at 126 back to the drum at a pipe connection 121. The pipe 121 and line 119 form an apex at 122 above the level of water in the drum to prevent siphoning of water from the drum and cooling fins 124 on the pipe 121 prevent the water boiling therein. A venting valve 134 relieves suction on excess pressure in the drum. For the heat drying operation the drum is emptied and hot air is circulated to and from the drum by the fan 117.
