Abstract

1,016,102. Thermoelectric devices. PYE Ltd. July 23, 1963 [Aug. 2, 1962], No. 29688/62. Heading H1K. A thermoelectric device comprises a solid block of semi-conductor material (Fig. 2, not shown) having alternate N and P type segments with adjacent faces in physical contact over substantially their whole area. Fig. 4 shows a refrigerator unit in which a bar B of alternate N and P units is sandwiched between an air cooled, finned member 5 and a cooled member 10, the electric supply being to terminals 7, 8. A similar series connected arrangement functioning as a Seebeck thermoelectric generator is described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown). Parallel fed arrangements of both kinds are described (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). The metallic heatexchange members and the PN units are separated by a thin insulating film. In manufacture strips of semi-conductor material are sprayed, painted or gas treated with suitable impurities which diffuse under heat; segments formed from blocks of separate P and N-type may be cast alternately; layers of alternating types may be sintered in a mould, or alternate layers of the two types may be melted or keyed together.
