Abstract

Aqueous nitric acid is decomposed by submitting the solution to electrolysis between electrodes of which the anode is of a metal or metal alloy inert to the solution and the cathode is of carbon or carbon containing a small proportion of metal and the cathode potential is maintained between +0.3 and +0.8 volts with respect to the voltage of a calomel electrode. The process may be used in the recovery of metals, e.g. uranium, from nitric acid serving to lower the concentration of nitric acid present to a level at which it will not interfere with a subsequent process. The process of this invention may be combined with an electrodialysis of the solution.
