Abstract
1,016,027. Embossing machines. AVERY PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Sept. 16, 1963 [Oct. 16, 1962], No. 36375/63. Heading B6F. [Also in Division B4] Index setting-arrangements; aligning for impression; impression arrangements.-A manual embossing tool comprises two die-wheels 51, 52, Fig. 8, arranged face to face and interconnected by a spur gear 53 engaging teeth 54 and 55 formed on the peripheries of the die wheels so that they rotate together to bring any one of a number of pairs of complementary dies disposed about the peripheries of the wheels to an embossing position. On " dialling " of a selected die, which appears in the window 83 a handle 20 pivotally mounted at 13 is squeezed, whereupon a cam lug 64 engages a spring-biased die plunger 63, which displaces upwardly a flexible radial finger 57 on the lower die wheel 52 to impress the die against its complementary die on the upper wheel 51. The dies are aligned for impression by a detent 58 engaging a locating detent groove 59, Fig. 1, formed in the upper die wheel. Paper, strip, web feeding, guiding and cutting arrangements.-A strip of material which may be protected by a backing strip, is fed into the tool from a roll inserted through a hinged coverplate 34, Fig. 8, which when closed is retained in position by tabs 41 of a latch 36, which engage projections 35 on the cover-plate 34. The strip is fed intermittently along a guide track 27 on releasing the handle 20 after embossing when a part 30 engages a ratchet-wheel to rotate a feed roller 32 which co-operates with an idler roller 33. The guide track 27 is disposed symmetrically about the longitudinal axis of the tool so that it extends between the die wheels along the diametral lines of the wheels. Such an arrangement permits the operator to see the most recently embossed character immediately following the embossing step without the necessity of advancing or retracting the strip. In another embodiment (in Fig. 10, not shown) the guide track is offset from the diametral lines of the wheels towards the tangent parallel to the diametral lines by a distance less than half the radius of the die wheels. When a strip has been embossed with the selected characters the die wheels are set to " cut-off " position, whereupon the handle is squeezed and a pair of cut-off dies 71, 72, Fig. 3, cut the strip transversely. In the case of a backed strip material the facing strip has a leading edge formed at 77, Fig. 1, and the protective backing strip is partially perforated at 78 and may be manually separated at the perforations. The portion between 78 and 77 of the backing strip comprises a starting web for the subsequent label. The cut-off dies are interchangeable to provide variously shaped edges 77, e.g. arrow-headed. Letter-spacing arrangements.-When spacings between words are required the handle 20 is squeezed sufficiently to enable the pawl 30 to engage the next tooth on the ratchet wheel and the handle is then released. Partial squeezing of the handle does not operate the die plunger 63. Type-wheels; types, dies, and printing surfaces.-The upper and lower die wheels 51 and 52, Fig. 8, are mounted loosely on bushes 24 and 25 and spaced apart by spacing members 26 (Fig. 9, not shown). The die wheels are provided on their peripheries with teeth 54 and 55 for engagement with a spur gear 53 so that they rotate together. The upper wheel is a rigid disc carrying a female member of each pair of a set of alpha-numerical embossing characters. The male members are carried on flexible radial arms 57, separated from their neighbours by slots 56. The die wheels are also provided with a pair of cut-off dies, the pair including an upper die 71, Fig. 3, and a lower die 72. The upper die includes a pair of arcuate cutters 74. More than one type of cut-off dies may be provided to form different types of label ends. The cutoff dies are replaceable viz. the upper die by loosening the screws 61 and the lower one by lifting the radial arm 57 out of the dovetail connection 81 in which it is retained by the central spacer 26 (Fig. 9, not shown). Visual indication of type selected.-A viewing window 83, Fig. 1, is provided to indicate the selected pair of dies at the embossing station, the upper surface of die wheel 51 being marked with indicia representing the symbol on the pair of dies in register with the strip.
