Abstract

1,016,011. Coating sheets and films. B.X. PLASTICS Ltd. May 21, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 6207/61. Headings B5A and B5B. A sheet of plastics material is coated with a film of plastics material by extruding the base material through an extrusion die and extruding at a slower rate on to the surface of the base material at a point before it emerges from the die lips, a layer of coating material having a viscosity equal to or less than that of the base material. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises an extrusion die 1 with a main plastic manifold 2 feeding into a main extrusion channel 3 and thence to die lips 4. The flow of plastics through channel 3 is adjustable by means of choke 5. A coating manifold 7 has a similarly adjustable extrusion channel 9 leading to main channel 3. Apparatus is also described for obtaining one or two top coatings and also an under coating to a base material. An example of materials used is a polystyrene base with a coating of polystyrene which may possess an antistatic agent.
