A flashing direction indicator lamp system for a road vehicle can be used with batteries of two different voltages. The system is described with respect to a trailer which may be connected to a tractor having either a 12v. or a 24v. battery by connectors 3, 3a. Terminals 4, 4a, 5, 5a are connected over resistors 15, 16 to the trailer tail, number plate and stop lamps while terminals 8, 8a, 9, 9a are connected to the trailer direction indicator lamps which are operated selectively by a switch 13 and flasher 14 in the tractor. When a 12v. battery is in use, relay 17 is not energized and its contacts are as shown. If the tractor has a 24v. battery, however, relay contacts 17e open to insert dimming resistors in circuit with the tail, stop and number plate lamps and contacts 17a, 17b and 17c, 17d open and close, respectively, to insert choppers 20, 21 in series with the direction indicator lamps. On operation of switch 13 current flow to these lamps is thus converted to a square waveform as the selected chopper switch 20 is operated by the flasher current passing through winding 21 so that the R.M.S. value of the square wave is reduced to approximately 12 volts. A transistorized square wave generator operating in known manner is also described (Fig. 2, not shown), which may be used in lieu of each chopper.
