Abstract

Compositions comprise a water - soluble alkoxylated polyvinyl alcohol and 1 to 10 weight per cent of a plasticizer therefor which is a water-soluble partial ester of a C12- 20 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with a polyhydric alcohol, the partial ester having been condensed with 5 to 30 moles of a C2- 4 alkylene oxide per mole of the ester. The polyvinyl alcohol may be a polyvinyl acetate partially or completely hydrolysed and reacted with a C2- 4 alkylene oxide in the presence of ammonia, alkylamines or alkanolamines. The plasticizer may be derived from lauric, palmitic, oleic and stearic acids; ethylene glycol, glycerol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol and sorbitan; and ethylene, propylene or butylene oxide. The polyvinyl alcohol may be alkoxylated in the presence of the plasticizers, e.g. in suspension in a non-solvent such as hexane. The compositions may be dissolved in water and used to cast films, e.g. for packaging detergents. In examples (1) polyvinyl alcohol is alkoxylated with ethylene oxide in the presence of ammonia and triethanolamine, and the product dissolved in water containing (2) ethoxylated sorbitan monolaurate and (3) the ethoxylated monolaurate, monopalmitate, mono-oleate and monostearate of ethylene glycol, glycerol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol and sorbitan; and (6) polyvinyl alcohol is alkoxylated with ethylene oxide in suspension in hexane in the presence of ammonia and ethoxylated sorbitan monolaurate.
