Abstract
1,015,553. Positive clutches. AUSTIN MOTOR CO. Ltd. Aug. 21, 1964 [Sept. 19, 1963], No. 36865/63. Heading F2C. Relates to a motor vehicle change-speed gear, double, synchromesh, positive dog-clutch of the inertia-lock or constant-load type, wherein a clutch sleeve 9 selectively engageable with clutch teeth 13, 15 is gear coupled with, to be axially slideable on, a synchronizing element 1 which is splined on a shaft 6 and has synchronizing rings (not shown) co-operating with cones 17, 18. In such a clutch, means preventing the element 1 from drifting or being forced so that an opposite cone is contacted before a clutch already engaged has been properly released and unnecessary frictional wear results comprises two rounded-end plungers 2, 3 housed in coaxial radial bores 7 in the element 1 and co-operating with axially staggered recesses 4, 5 in the shaft 6 and oppositely acting wedge abutments 8 formed on, or carried by, the clutch sleeve 9, the arrangement being such that in neutral both plungers have limited radial float and can leave the recesses and enter a groove 12 in the clutch sleeve but when the clutch sleeve has been moved in one direction, say leftwards as shown, into one of its clutchengaging positions, one of the plungers, 2, remains free whilst by means of its co-operating abutment 8 the other plunger, 3, is held in its recess, 5, and prevents the element 1 from moving rightwardly beyond its neutral position unless the clutch sleeve is first returned to neutral.
