Abstract

1,015,483. Brake linings; friction clutches. STAMICARBON N.V. July 20, 1962 [July 21, 1961], No. 28093/62. Headings F2C and F2E. In a brake or clutch, a friction lining is formed of juxtaposed strips, each lining strip being supported on a steel strip secured at its ends to a rigid carrier so that the lining strips may adapt themselves to any deformation of the co-operating surface. Figures 2 and 3 show a brake shoe 3 formed with a brake lining divided into a number of strips 3<SP>1</SP> each of which is bonded to a steel strip 11 supported on collars 14 surrounding bolts 12 for holding the linings and the steel strips 11 to the brake shoe flange 13. The gap 15 separating each strip 11 from the flange 13 enables the strip to bend when the pressure on the brake lining is locally high owing to deformation of the surface of the drum. The lining strips 3<SP>1</SP> in the unloaded condition may have a convex configuration or alternatively the friction surface of the brake drum may be curved.
