Abstract
1,015,462. Oscillatory vane actuators. MAC GREGOR-CAMARAIN. June 25, 1962 [May 29, 1962], No. 24302/62. Heading F1F. In an oscillatory vane actuator, Figs. 2 and 4 (Fig. 2 not forming part of the invention), comprising a cylindrical rotary member 2 supported in bearings 5 at either end of a stationary housing 1 in which the member is alternately rotated in opposite directions by pressure fluid introduced into chambers 13 to 16 separated from each other by partition members 9, 11 mounted respectively on the member 2 and the housing 1, leakage of fluid from one chamber to another is prevented by flexible packings 23, 24, each packing being in the form of a strip located in a longitudinal groove in a peripheral surface of each of the partition members, which peripheral surface is in movable contact with the housing or the rotary member, the strip being of mouldable material and being provided with sharp corners for registering with the edges of sharp edged shoulders formed at each end portion of the housing (between the latter and the bearing 5), and annular gaskets 31 being provided each having one face in sealing contact with one of the bearings 5, a second face in sealing and sliding contact with the rotary member 2 and a third face in sealing contact with the strip. The member 2 has a splined portion 8 for driving a device. The chambers 13-16 communicate in pairs through passages 17, 18 in the member 2 and are alternately supplied with hydraulic fluid through ports 19, 20 in the housing. Each partition member is provided along its entire periphery with at least one groove into which the packing strip, which may be of rubber or synthetic material, is located. The gasket 31 prevents leakage from taking place radially and is in the form of a metallic ring, Fig. 6, having in cross-section the shape of an isosceles triangle and formed at intervals with recesses opening on its faces 31b, 31c and filled with rubber or plastic. See Fig. 7, flexible discontinuous strips 34 are mounted on the partition members and radial sealing is obtained by an annular gasket of metal or alloy having a thick portion 35a tightly fitted in a groove in the member 2 and a thinner cylindrical portion 35b engaging between the ends of the strips 34 and a toroidal ring 37 located in a groove in the bearing 5.
