Abstract

A complex of caprylic acid diethanolamide with diethanolamine or a mixed complex of capric and caprylic acid diethanolamides with diethanolamine is prepared by reacting said acid(s) with excess of diethanolamine. The complexes are used as germicides (see Division A5).ALSO:Antimicrobial compositions for disinfectant, pharmaceutical and veterinary use comprise one or more fatty acid amides of formula:- <FORM:1015261/A5-A6/1> in which R represents an alkyl, alkenyl or alkadienyl residue having 1 to 10 carbon atoms or one such group mono-substituted with a hydroxyl group; R1 is a hydrogenatom or analkylor mono-hydroxy alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; n is an integer from 1 to 4 inclusive, and when n is at least 2 the hydroxyl group is separated from the nitrogen atom by at least two carbon atoms or a complex thereof with an excess of an amine in association with a non-toxic, irritant or noxious vehicle other than water or an alkanol of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The compositions may be formulated as dusts, tinctures, aerosols, washes, solutions, suspensions, dispersions, pessaries, suppositories, lipsticks, soaps, skin or hair creams, hair oils or shampoos, astringent tonic or after shave lotions, lip salves, barrier creams or shaving creams. They may contain non-ionic, anionic or amphoteric detergents or soaps and can be used to sterilise blankets and garments. The compositions may contain insect repellants.
