Abstract

1,014,988. Welding by pressure. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 3, 1964 [March 6, 1963], No. 8952/64. Heading B3R. [Also in Division B5] In making a welded joint the workpieces are supported by a movable supporting member, are contacted by the end of an amplitude tranformer which is maintained in ultrasonic vibration and are propelled in a direction parallel to the direction of ultrasonic vibration simultaneously with the formation of the welded joint. The cylindrical metal body and the cover of a can 9, 10 are supported on a roller 11 rotatable about a spindle 12 in a thrust member 13 adapted to be pressed by a force P. The pieces 9, 10 are engaged by the portion 5 of an amplitude transformer 4, 5 secured to an ultrasonic transducer 2, a thin support plate 7 being provided for the end of the portion 5. Depending on the force P the workpieces become welded and either move towards or away from the transducer. The support may be slidable rather than rotatable. Aluminium strips may be welded and the welding of plastics is referred to.
