Abstract

1,014,903. Container closures. W. R. GRACE & CO. May 9, 1963 [May 9, 1962 (3)], No. 18441/63. Heading B8T. A gasket, which may be in the form of an annulus, for a container closure is made by applying to the closure a liquid gasketing composition comprising an elastomeric polymer dissolved or dispersed in a volatile liquid, expelling the liquid from the composition in not more than ten minutes whereby a cellular gasket is formed, and, when the liquid gasket composition is not a gellable latex having a gas finely dispersed therein, compressing the cellular gasket to collapse the cells and form a substantially solid gasket before a closure is applied to the container. The polymer may be a natural rubber, butadiene-styrene copolymer, a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, butadiene - styrene - acrylonitrile terpolymer, polychloroprene, polysulphide rubber, butyl rubber, a plasticized vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer or a mixture of two or more of these. The composition may comprise a gellable latex with air finely dispersed therein, and with a gelling agent comprising an ammonium soap, a complex zinc ammonium salt or a polyvinyl methyl ether. The polymer may be dispersed or dissolved in an organic liquid which is flashed off as the composition is applied to the closure. The liquid may be expelled at temperatures between 150‹ and 400‹ F.
