Magnetic compasses.-A lever b, by which the needle or card e of a magnetic compass may be lifted from its pivot a<2>, is carried by a flexible piece of metal c, which closes an aperture in the side of the case a. Spirit-compass cases are thus rendered liquid-tight at the lever aperture. The piece of metal c is preferably provided with concentric corrugations, and the outer end of the lever b may be actuated by a screw f<1> and spring f<2> carried by a frame f secured to the case.
