Abstract

1,014,255. Blowing lances. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Feb. 15, 1965, No. 38129/62. Heading F4B. A lance for the treatment of molten metal comprises a metal tube provided with a core of porous refractory material extending from one end of the tube for a length at least equivalent to four times the maximum diameter of the core. The porous material may be alumina, silicon carbide, or magnesia, and the pore size may be within the range 50-60 microns. The metal tube may be constructed of mild or stainless steel. Fig. 1 shows a tube 10 having a parallel bore and a porous core 11 anchored within it by pins 12. The core 11 may be formed in situ within the tube 10, or the tube may be shrunk-fitted on to the core. The outer surface of the tube 10 is coated with refractory material 13. Fig. 3 shows the tube constructed of a number of sections 14 having tapering bores containing similarly shaped porous cores 15. The sections 14 are retained in alignment by threaded metal collars 16.
